On 11 June, NAQA held a seminar for the Public Integrity Council and the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine, focusing on the application of Ukrainian legislation in the field of academic integrity.
In his opening remarks, Andrii Butenko, NAQA Head, emphasised that academic integrity today is not merely an internal requirement, but a vital component of public trust and the integrity of the legal community.
The key speakers at the event were Ivan Nazarov, NAQA Vice Head; Tetiana Sabadosh, Head of the Legal Department; Leontii Shypilov, Head of the Academic Integrity and One-Time Councils’ Operation Department; and leading specialists from the department, Nataliia Batsak and Oleksii Pushniak.
The seminar programme covered the full range of legal, procedural, and textual aspects of ensuring academic integrity in Ukraine. Participants began by analysing the fundamental balance between regulatory frameworks and ethical considerations, examining in detail current judicial approaches to resolving disputes in this field and trends in the development of legislation concerning the revocation of academic degrees. The practical part of the event was devoted to the methodology of academic writing: experts presented clear guidelines for distinguishing between original, collaborative, and third-party contributions in theses, as well as the specifics of citing legislation and legal definitions. This comprehensive examination of the topics enabled attendees to gain a systematic understanding of the issue, ranging from general philosophical and legal principles to specific tools for detecting academic plagiarism.
The presentations gave way to a lively discussion of practical indicators for identifying textual manipulation and verifying the integrity of legal professionals.
