On March 2, a presentation of the draft Law of Ukraine “On Academic Integrity”, organized at the initiative of the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine by NAQA together with the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Education, Science and Innovation was held at the National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”.
The event was dedicated to the presentation of the draft law “On academic integrity”.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, personally opened the presentation and noted that the violation of academic integrity destroys the scientific potential of the nation, and therefore, there is an urgent need to adopt such a law that will once and for all arrange the issues of compliance with academic integrity. Indeed, this is the question of Ukraine’s future. NAQA Head Andrii Butenko outlined the importance of the draft law and emphasized that it is not about fighting plagiarism, but about encouraging higher education institutions to become more responsible for preserving and nurturing academic integrity.
The presentation part of the meeting began with the speech of the head of the subcommittee on higher education of the Committee on Education, Science and Innovation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Yuliia Hryshyna. The head of the working group on writing the draft law spoke about the goal pursued by the group, which was to create a comprehensive law that would have answers to all questions related to academic integrity. The vice-president of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Nataliia Kuznetsova, in her part of the presentation, emphasized the relevance of this law, which would ensure decency and honesty in the scientific space of our country, and emphasized the complexity of the draft law, which has no analogues in the legislative space of any other country. The main part of the presentation was carried out by NAQA Vice Head Ivan Nazarov, who thoroughly familiarized the audience with the draft Law of Ukraine “On Academic Integrity”, spoke about the idea of developing the draft law, explained the structure of the document and expectations for its adoption. The presentation ended with a lively discussion, during which valid proposals for improving the draft law were voiced. The head of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention Oleksandr Novikov, representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the State Service for the Quality of Education, the Council of Young Scientists under the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Education Ombudsman of Ukraine Sergii Gorbachov and others also took part in the discussion on the provisions of the draft law.
